JA Planchers repairs hardwood floors that don't need a full refinish — water damage, broken boards, deep scratches, gaps, squeaks and pet stains. We can splice in matching boards, sand and stain only the affected area, and leave the floor looking like it was never touched.
Most homeowners in Montréal are quoted a full floor replacement when one room or one section is the actual problem. Before you replace, get a free on-site repair quote — we'll tell you honestly whether a repair will hold or whether refinishing is the better long-term spend.
From diagnosis to invisible patch — typical repairs are completed in 1-3 days.
We visit your home, assess the damage, identify the species and width of your existing boards, and check whether matching boards are still available. You'll get a fixed-price quote within 24 h — no obligation.
We source boards in the right species, width and thickness — solid oak, maple, walnut, engineered, and reclaimed. Where the existing floor is discontinued, we re-mill from a less-visible area (closet, under-fridge, behind a future appliance) so the patch is invisible from anywhere a guest stands.
We cut out the damaged section, splice the new boards in flush, then sand and refinish only the affected area. Stain colour is matched on-site with test patches before any production stain is mixed.
Every repair gets the same level of care as a full sanding: we log your stain recipe so future repairs match the surrounding floor exactly.
Tell us what happened — water leak, dropped pot, dog scratch, mystery squeak — and we'll come look. No obligation, no pressure.

Yes. We splice in matching boards, sand the patch flush with the surrounding floor, and re-finish only the affected area when possible. On older or heavily faded floors we sometimes recommend sanding the full room so the repair blends invisibly.
We bring stain samples on site and apply 2-3 test patches on the actual floor. Once you approve the match, we mix the production batch and apply it identically. We also keep the recipe on file for future repairs.
Most squeaks are caused by movement at the joist or subfloor. We diagnose from below where accessible, refasten loose boards from above with finish nails or counter-bored screws, then plug and finish the holes so they disappear.
Water damage is time-sensitive. We aim to be on site within 24-48 h to assess, dry, and stop further cupping. Insurance documentation provided.
Yes —on workmanship and finish, same as on a full sanding job.
The questions prospects ask most about this service — answered honestly by a contractor who does this every week.
For a single split board in a hidden spot — maybe. For any visible repair (kitchen, entryway, living room) or anything involving water damage, it's almost always a mistake. Splicing a fresh board into an aged floor requires colour matching, precise tongue-and-groove cutting, and localized sanding that blends with the rest of the floor. A DIY splice visible from 3 metres looks like a bandage. For water damage, without a moisture meter you can't measure subfloor moisture content — repairing too early locks moisture in and swells the new board within two months.
Three things stack: (1) finding a board of the same species and same aged-tone as the original — wood patinas, new boards are paler; (2) cutting tongue-and-groove so the new board interlocks without forcing; (3) sanding the repair to exactly the same level as the surrounding floor without dishing. Without practice, all three failure modes compound into a visible patch that drags the home's resale value.
Depends on subfloor moisture content. Under 12% MC, it's cosmetic only — sand and refinish. 12–18% MC, dehumidify 7–14 days first. Above 18% MC, open the subfloor and inspect for mould. JA Planchers brings a moisture meter to every on-site visit (free) and gives the honest recommendation — repair vs refinish vs replace.
Repair cost depends on how many boards need replacing, whether the stain needs matching, and whether the work is localized or includes a full-floor sand. For extensive damage we usually combine the repair with a full-floor sand so the repaired zone blends invisibly. We measure on site for free and give a fixed-price quote within 24 hours.
